Preventing Summer Brain Drain: How Schools, Districts and Families Can Protect Learning Gains

Written by Claire Avenoso

What happens when kids go months over the summer without any school?

Every summer, students across the country experience what educators call “summer brain drain.” This term refers to the learning loss that occurs when academic skills aren’t consistently practiced, like over summer breaks.

While a break is essential, students’ skills in math and reading can decrease significantly over the summer. In a study by the Brookings Institute, researchers found that students lost up to a month of school material over the summer. For districts working hard to accelerate achievement and raise test scores, those lost months matter.

Summer often disrupts routines. Students move from structured school days to unstructured schedules. For some families, access to enrichment opportunities and academic support may be limited. For English Learners and historically underserved students, the gap can widen even faster.

Without intentional intervention, the fall becomes a time of reteaching rather than advancing. That affects student confidence, school-wide performance metrics, and test scores.

The good news? Summer learning loss is preventable with the right structure, consistency, and human connection.

How to Prevent Summer Brain Drain?

Preventing summer brain drain isn’t about overwhelming students with worksheets. It’s about providing structured, meaningful learning opportunities that reinforce core skills while building confidence.

High-dosage, small-group tutoring has emerged as one of the most effective strategies for accelerating student growth. Research from the University of Chicago Education Lab found that high-dosage tutoring can triple student learning in a single academic year.

Unlike occasional homework help, high-dosage tutoring provides consistent sessions multiple times per week, aligned to grade-level standards and delivered by trained educators. When students receive targeted instruction in small groups, they engage more deeply, ask more questions, and build lasting mastery.

Just as importantly, in-person learning environments foster relationships. Students are more likely to attend, participate, and stay motivated when they build real connections with their tutors and peers.

Districts that invest in structured summer tutoring often see measurable academic gains that carry into the fall.

For example, during the 2024–2025 school year, HeyTutor partnered with K-12 districts nationwide to provide in-person, small-group, high-dosage tutoring during the school year, after school, and over the summer. The results were significant:

  • The share of students testing at or above grade level increased by 160% in Math and 162% in ELA from beginning- to end-of-program assessments.
  • Among English Learners, the percentage of students at or above grade level increased 95% in Math and 92% in ELA.

These outcomes demonstrate what’s possible when consistent, targeted support is implemented. Summer programs built on this model create acceleration while preventing learning loss.

Tips for Families and District Leaders to Prevent Summer Brain Drain

For parents:

  • Establish a consistent weekly learning schedule.
  • Encourage reading 20 to 30 minutes daily.
  • Consider structured tutoring programs that meet multiple times per week.

For teachers and principals:

  • Identify students who would benefit most from summer acceleration.
  • Prioritize small-group instruction aligned to fall standards.
  • Use data to monitor growth throughout the summer.

For superintendents and district leaders:

  • Design summer programs that emphasize high-frequency, in-person support.
  • Ensure equity by prioritizing English Learners and underserved populations.
  • Measure impact from beginning- to end-of-program to inform fall planning.

Looking Ahead to Fall Success

Summer does not have to mean starting over at the beginning of the school year. With intentional, high-impact support, it can become a launchpad for stronger confidence, higher test scores, and sustained academic growth.

If your district is exploring ways to strengthen summer programming or expand high-dosage tutoring during the school year, after school, or next summer, we invite you to learn more about how HeyTutor partners with schools nationwide to drive measurable results.
