Our History
2014
HeyTutor was founded as a trusted online marketplace built around one goal: helping every student thrive. By thoughtfully matching students and families with qualified tutors from across the country, HeyTutor delivered personalized instruction tailored to each learner's unique needs across any subject.
2020
The COVID-19 pandemic and resulting school closures created urgent, widespread learning gaps that distance learning only deepened. As students returned to classrooms in 2020–2021, HeyTutor recognized that school districts themselves were searching for partners who could help close these gaps at scale. Drawing on its proven ability to source qualified tutors, HeyTutor began working directly with districts, marking a pivotal shift from its direct-to-consumer roots to becoming a trusted partner in district-wide tutoring solutions.
2021-2022
Growing exponentially from one school year to the next, HeyTutor raised venture capital from its growth partner, ScOp VC, to accelerate its impact from hundreds to thousands of students served. To lead this next chapter, HeyTutor welcomed a seasoned leadership team, Jennifer Sheffield (CEO), David Siegle (CTO), Deven Bhattacharya (COO), and Christina Merchant (Curriculum Director). Together, the team helped transform HeyTutor into a district-focused tutoring partner, developing research-backed, individualized intervention programs designed to close learning gaps for students nationwide.
2023-2024
HeyTutor continued expanding its in-person tutoring model nationwide, growing its workforce to more than 2,000 tutors. In one large urban district alone, more than 900 tutors served 5,000 students during a single school year. In 2024, HeyTutor earned Stanford University’s National Student Support Accelerator Program Design Badge, recognizing the rigor of its consultative, research-informed approach to designing tutoring interventions that advance student achievement.
2025
HeyTutor was named a Tech & Learning Awards of Excellence: Best of 2025 winner in both the Primary and Secondary Education categories. During this period, HeyTutor continued strengthening its technology-enabled instructional model, bringing together high-quality tutors, standards-aligned curriculum, embedded instructional guidance, and actionable student data to support district partners at scale.
2026
Today, HeyTutor is a leading in-person, technology-enabled tutoring partner at scale, with partnerships across more than a dozen states, hundreds of schools, and thousands of students served. By bringing together purpose-built technology, AI-supported innovation, rigorous standards-aligned curriculum, and more than a decade of experience recruiting and preparing tutors, HeyTutor is helping shape the next era of effective, individualized student support.
